▟  Mexico City has more museums than any other in the world—one count shows 170! From venues with impressive, world-renowned collections, inspiring cultural centers, and even specialized niche museums, there are a wealth of options to explore.

While the city may be your destination, perhaps it is only the beginning of your discoveries.

Those in Mexico City are fortunate to be surrounded by world-class museums.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯

Museo Nacional de Antropología is one such institution. Its vast spaces detail Mexico’s history, from the first settlers to the traditions of the country’s current indigenous groups.

Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes shelters its collection inside a gorgeous art deco building. There are exhibits on plastic arts and history, and the work of Mexico’s greatest muralists: Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, Roberto Montenegro and Jorge González Camarena.

Museo Frida Kahlo, aka the Blue House, is a mecca for those interested in this evocative painter, and MUAC, or Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, has especially good installations, such as the Experimental Sound Space. Not only its vast art collection—running from the colonial period to the mid-20th century—but also its ornate neoclassical architecture makes MUNAL, Museo Nacional de Arte in the Historic Center worth a look.

There are countless art museums, but the most noteworthy include Museo Jumex, Museo Rufino Tamayo, Museo Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, and the Museo de Arte Moderno. This is just a sampling of the spectacular museums in this great city.

If a more interactive experience is what’s up your alley, try one of the profusion of cultural centers. If you’re already exploring downtown, check out the Centro Cultural y Fábrica Digital El Rule. Beside the Torre Latinoamericana, it focuses on the visual arts and new technologies, with research, workshops, and exhibitions.

Similarly centered around technology is the Centro de Cultura Digital, exploring digital practices and cultural production. On Sundays there are family-friendly activities.

Book lovers will be wowed by the Biblioteca José Vasconcelos, an architecturally intriguing library spanning three buildings with gardens and art pieces. It hosts all manner of cultural events. FARO Cosmos, whose art deco facade reveals its past as a movie theater, now has film screenings and plays, plus sensory and immersive experiences linking culture and community.

Finally, visit the UNAM, Mexico’s premier public university, and stop by the Centro Cultural Universitario. There, you can explore all types of art, with a focus on post-1968 works. Wander the sculpture garden, attend a concert, then recharge with a visit to the restaurant featuring contemporary Mexican cuisine.

These, and many more, offer the chance to experience culture being made.

In a city with so many museums, there is something for every interest. The smallest visitors will be delighted by Papalote Museo del Niño. For kids and kids-at-heart, there are interactive exhibits and friendly staff.

Also fun to see, Museo del Juguete Antiguo de México exhibits toys from the past, some over 100 years old.

Traditional toys and all kinds of folk art are on display at the Museo de Arte Popular. The museum shop is also a great place to pick up exquisite handicrafts to take home.

Universum Museo de las Ciencias, a science museum, is a blast, especially the mathematics hall.

Along these lines, try MIDE, the Museo Interactivo de Economía. Who knew learning about the economy could be so much fun?

The architecture is also worth a look. And your taste buds will be watering at MUCHO Mundo Chocolate. It excellently covers the history, production, properties, effects, and more of this beloved treat.
